Fellow Quilters,
Once again I have been invited to participate in the blog tour for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks, this time for Volume 9, on sale May 6. I usually scour the issue, scouting out the designs either done by pattern designers who also partner with Northcott to design patterns for our upcoming fabric collections, or designs that feature Northcott fabric collections. Then I recreate these blocks in the fabric collection that Northcott showcases in the advertisement in the issue. This time around there were a whopping 8 blocks! They are #817 Square Dance (designed by Northcott fabric designer Sue Beevers), #818 Triangle Trick (made using Stonehenge), #856 Lavender Lattice (designed by yours truly and made using Lavender Market), #866 Pinwheel Polka (designed by Marilyn Foreman of Quilt Moments), #872 Banner Day (designed by Chris Hoover of Whirligig Designs), #890 Building Blocks (designed by Celine Perkins of Perkins Dry Goods), #894 Face In (made using Passion & Kaleidoscope), and #898 Two Tulips (designed by Margie Ullery of Ribbon Candy Quilt Co.) I thought I would change things up a bit this time around. Since my block was included in this issue, I recreated it in a quilt setting using the Stonehenge Celebration collection featured in the magazine. I came up with 3 different settings: a straight set with alternate blocks, an on-point set with the same alternate blocks, and a setting that starts with the panel in the center and frames it with borders and blocks. Which one do you prefer?
Thank you to all of you who commented on my last blog post. In the post, I talked about fears, and overcoming them. I would say from your comments that my post resonated with many of you, and I was moved by your feedback. Bloggers sometimes feel that they are talking but is anyone really listening? It takes a lot to acknowledge your fears, and to share them with others. I appreciate you sharing yours with me. Many of you commented that you have overcome a fear of, or at least resistance to, free-motion quilting. Many more of you have not quite overcome this fear. Good News! I can help!! In every blog post this year (and maybe next), I will give you a tip, hint, or advice on free-motion quilting. Tonight before I sat down to write this post, I was preparing for a free-motion quilting class that I am teaching tomorrow to the guild in Beaverton. Pretty much all of my quilting these days is done on my longarm, but as I was preparing my samples, I recalled the many quilts that I quilted on my sewing machine. Tomorrow I will try to ease the fears and frustration of the students as we work through various techniques.
So, my first piece of advice is… read every issue of Quiltmaker magazine this year. June Dudley and her staff have called 2014 the Year of Machine Quilting, and each issue contains helpful tips and hints for machine quilting. Even those of us who have been machine quilting for 20 years can learn from these issues. I plan on following along with contributor Natalia Bonner as she guides us through various techniques. Won’t you join me?
My next piece of advice is… practice, practice, practice. Anyone can free-motion quilt with enough practice. Anyone! Check out the clearance table at your favorite quilt shop and pick up a couple of crib-size panels. Quilt them to death – try every technique you can think of until you feel comfortable with it. Quilt around every motif on the panels. Focus on achieving a consistent stitch length. Practice different background fillers such as stipple in all of the open areas. Quilt every square inch of those panels. When you are done, take a look at where you started, and notice how much you have improved. Yes you have!

Personally, I love the blocks set on point, as I think on point always adds another dimension of interest to a quilt. Patti…thanks for showing us not one, but three variations. You are always an inspiration to fellow quilters!

This was a hard choice. I guess if I had to choose, I would choose the panel quilt but I really liked all three. Thanks for the encouragement about machine quilting. I’m still at that beginning stage where it looks awful but I know to keep practicing. Practice makes better.
They are all lovely but I like #3 the best. Love the idea of practice free motion quilting on a baby panel. Will have to try that.

Hi Patti! I guess I would have to choose the straight set layout (the one on top) as my favourite. I do really like the panel setting too, but I would LOVE to see it in a Canadian version! I love the block but I think my favourite layout is the straight set one.
I prefer the on point one but better yet I loved the idea you gave in your information regarding picking up a baby quilt and machine quilting it to death to get more and more practice. I will definitely do that to help learn.

Celebration straight-set quilt is quite lovely. I’ve yet to figure out to do “on-point” quilts. Learning slowly, but love it.

I like the straight set quilt the best. Strangely, it’s the diagonal movement in that one that appeals to me. You would think an on-point setting would have the diagonal movement, but not with this block. Interesting…

All of them are stirring and exciting. However, I think the one on point would be fun to make…….especially for a vet or current service person.

I love patriotic quilts so I liked all 3 quilts, but since I make quilts for veterans, The Celebration Panel quilt caught my eye. It is attractive, but would sew up quickly. Thanks so much for the hint to practice machine quilting on baby quilt panels. That I could do! I could also then donate them to our guild service project. I love multi-tasking!
I like #1, the Straight-Set the best. All are beautiful, but #1 looks the neatest to me.

My favorite is the Celebration with Panel. It is made with beautiful fabrics, very bright, and, most of all, extremely patriotic looking, which we need to display and be proud of the fact that we are Americans.
#1, the Celebration straight set quilt, is the one I like the best. I like the angular look.

While they are all lovely I prefer the Celebration-on Point quilt . For me as I am learning to quilt I am also learning about shape and directions. I am constantly surprised at just how strong I feel about liking or disliking particular patterns/shapes. I learn something new every day 🙂
I vote for the first setting. It has the look of a more complicated “on point” design without all the tricky bias blocks. As a longarm quilter, I can REALLY appreciate that! Congratulations on a great block design; I can hardly wait to get my hands on the newest volume of 100 Blocks to check it out up close.

It’s a tie between the straight set and the on point.
I like #1 best, because it has diagonal movement without bias setting triangles to deal with.
My first thought before I read any of the post was “Quilt of Valor”. Any veteran would be thrilled to receive any one of these, but the second one would take the fewest blocks, so that translates into “getting finished”. I know the panel in #3 would take even fewer, but I vote for #2. Thanks for the inspiration.
I just used some Stonehenge fabric in a quilt recently, and it is very nice.
So many gorgeous quilts to choose from that it is quite hard to choose! I think I like the Celebration on Point as it makes the block look more complex even though it appears to be simple to make. It reminds me of quilts made in the early 90’s by the designer Marsha McClosky. I would like to try the block and set it in either a strippy set or a half block drop set. Gorgeous and thank you for a chance to win!!

Number 1 for me…love that layout.
I hate it when I’m asked to choose between two or three options. They are all beautiful! The best I can do is eliminate setting #3, and that is only because I don’t prefer to use panels. But I like the way you used the blocks as a border for the panel. Darn, back to square 1!

Classic has always appealed to me, so # 1. Then of course picking the right fabric and colors are so important, but harder for me.

Personally the on-point celebration attracts my eye and fits most with my style. I will say however that Patriotic fabrics are my ultimate fun to work with. Even when I do a sample there is always a piece of patriotism sewn into my quilts somewhere. It’s a quirk of mine I can’t seem to shake. Hooray for the Red, White, and Blue.

Love the 2nd one – it seems to make the stars pop and is less busy than the other 2
I really like the #2 setting, though it was close between it and #1. In the end the complex look of 2 won out.
They are all lovely, but I would go with #1. Like the diagonals squares that make it look like it is on-point.
I love the ‘on point’ style the most, and I believe it is because it looks exactly the opposite. Usually I like the more diamond design on point produces, but I think I like the lacy effect created by the squares/diamonds that are not the actual star. Very cool pattern by the way. It’s amazing how dramatic a difference the designs create based on placement.

I think I like Celebration on point best, but it also looks neat around the panel. Great block. I FMQ on my home machine and sometimes it works wonderfully, and sometimes not. But when it works, it’s very gratifying.

I like the straight set best; it is amusing that the straight set with the alternate block gives an appearance of onpoint and the onpoint with the alternate block creates a square appearance.

I love the panel setting. Usually panel quilts are pretty boring, but this one is quite eye-catching. By the way, I absolutely love the Artisan Shimmer line and have already purchased enough for a quilt. I’m thinking of using it in the wedding quilt for my oldest grandson.

I love the impact of the panel quilt used as a wall hanging. I think it would inspire many non-quilters, hanging in city hall or their local public library, to remember the many freedoms our country enjoys

I like #1 the best. With the diagonal setting, it invites the viewer’s eyes to scan across the whole from corner to corner which makes it look and feel more interesting and artistic. It exhibits creativity with the more fluid and flowing diagonal lines that enhance and frame the block design.

Straight set is my favorite.
I like the straight set–because I like the overall diagonal look of that quilt. Just want you to know I overcame my fear of free motion quilting by jumping in with little projects. I use a treadle sewing machine and it is SEW FUN. Today I made some quilted fabric (little stipples) for a little clutch purse. I was actually able to quilt satin with regular sewing thread (because that was all I had in the right color) and it worked beautifully!!

I love the first one, stars in an irish chain. Variation of the Irish Chain were what first drew me to quilting in the first place. I also know what you mean about bloggers talking and not knowing if anyone is listening. I just figure I talk to myself while sewing anyway, I may as well let other people listen in
I love the red white and blue combination but I really like the number 1, I need to put one of these quilts on my bucket list!!! I hope I get that far to completing all of on my wish list.

The first quilt is a really striking quilt. The on-point quilt is one that I would have more problems constructing but the straight-set quilt is the type that I am more familiar with and therefore like that type of set. Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this drawing.

I like the Celebration on point setting the best. It seems to be the most calming to me and the placement if the colors really helps reinforce the calm. I am new to quilting and am just trying my hand at a pattern from “More Loose Change” using charm squares to form the blocks. It’s kind if strange to be a guy quilter…seems like there aren’t many of us out there. But I’m not letting that stop me. Thank you for creating great patterns like this for us beginners to follow. It helps inspire us to keep going inspires of the fears and challenges that quilting can create!

Patti — Thanks for your advice on how to be a better quilter. Funny… our local quilt guild has a “to be quilted” box at our clubhouse. I always grab the big quilts and use my good Circle Lord templates on them because I am very confident with those designs. BUT, just like you said, practice on panels. This week I just happened to find five panels in the box. The downside is that I need to make backs and bind them all too. BUT I will just learn more and more. I typically pick something new I want to try and just go for it on the panels.

i love all three, i am including the one with the panel too. i love to see quilts that start with a panel. i love both layouts but i have to say the on point one is more eye catching to me. i must have some sort of deslexia, because every time i make a quilt on point i wind up with a lop sided quilt and have to have a meeting with my old friend the mr. seam ripper. you did a great job on your block, congrats on getting it published babscorbitt@gmail.com

Thank you for the advice. The light bulb came on for me one day about practice, practice, practice. I realized that I had been sewing since I was at least ten and I thought if I had been practicing FMQ as long as I’d been sewing which is basically quilting, I would be good at it, too. Thanks for sharing the multiple settings. I think we get caught up on one setting, too. You are generous to share.

I like the straight setting which forms a diagonal grid. The on point setting forms a straight grid like a tic-tac-toe grid.

I love the ‘on point’ style the most, and I believe it is because it looks exactly the opposite. Usually I like the more diamond design on point produces, but I think I like the lacy effect created by the squares/diamonds that are not the actual star. Very cool pattern by the way. It’s amazing how dramatic a difference the designs create based on placement.
