Fellow Quilters,
What is your go-to snack? Do you prefer sweet or salty nibbles? I’m a sweets lover – I’ll take chocolate over potato chips any day! And not just any chocolate – no! I want the good stuff, a.k.a. the expensive brands that have their own shops, where the chocolates are sold individually, and one is never enough.
I’m also a sucker (no pun intended) for candy, especially if it’s chewy. 
My colleague Susanne has a weakness for the tiny Jelly Belly jellybeans, except the cantaloupe and pear flavors, so my job is to search through each bag to remove them (and eat them of course!) before she mistakenly pops one into her mouth.
Sweets is this month’s theme for the Quilt Block Mania blog tour, so I googled ‘sweets” for inspiration and found an old favorite – salt water taffy! 
These chewy pastel-colored treats are not in fact made from salt water. Through the pulling process, which makes the candy lighter and chewier, air is added by stretching out the mixture, folding it over, and stretching it again. The fruit-flavored candy is then cut into bite-size pieces and wrapped in waxed paper to keep it soft. Here is my Salt Water Taffy block

In Canada at this time of year, you can find Halloween kisses, a form of molasses taffy candy, in shops alongside the usual trick or treat offerings. 
When I was young, my siblings did not like them so I would barter small quantities of my other Halloween treats for larger quantities of their Halloween kisses – yum! Canadians apparently either love them or hate them. Most kids do NOT like them, however the stores sell out every Fall despite increased quantities being produced. Maybe kids would like them if they tried making them a.k.a participated in a good old-fashioned taffy pull. Here is a recipe for homemade Halloween kisses.

I have a definite love of all things sweet! My favourite this time of year is candy corn, halloween kisses and licorice.
I like to snack on sweet and salty popcorn, a lil of both! I tried the Halloween kisses, but now would leave them behind in the treat bowl. I have never made taffy.
Hallowe’en snack is for sure tootsie rolls, the small ones! Love salt water taffy and am going to try the recipe you supplied. Hallowe’en kisses can take them or leave them, so much better treats to choose from. Ha!
Well candy treat would have to be tootsie rolls! Only at hallowe’en of course! I am going to try your recipe for the salt water taffy. I have tried the hallowe’en kisses and would rather have the salt water taffy! Ha!
I like a combination of sweet and salty. Popcorn and M&Ms, pretzels and chocolate. As for Halloween Kisses, I loved them! My sisters did, too, so there was no bartering…and I KNOW my sister Barbara took some of mine. 🙂 My mom used to make a homemade version of them, too. Soooo good! We had a taffy pull with all of our neighbors (over a dozen kids) on the weekend before Halloween and Christmas every year until 1981, and got to personalize the flavor of each batch we made. Banana and coconut…good memories.

For salty, I like potato chips, and for sweet, chocolate is best. I don’t really like Halloween kisses. I never made salt water taffy, but I’ve tried to. Does that count?

oh but this is wonderful. Thanks for the pattern. I love salt water taffy. My kids and I made it one year and we had so much fun. But next year they didn’t want to do it. It was too much work. Well teenagers are hot and cold. Maybe should have started sooner. Now that they are in their 30″s they are doing it again. LOL I love chocolates with caramel the best or during Christmas time, peppermint candy canes. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net
I go for Fishers caramel popcorn! They are made nearby in Ocean City Maryland and Delaware.
