Ready, Set, Go… Snowboarding

4 Sep

Fellow Quilters,

Woop!  Woop!  Today is the first day of the My Happy Place Row-along organized by Marian Pena of Seams to be Sew – thank you Marian for organizing this fun event.  This is the 4th year of the Row-along and Marian has managed to round up a whopping 47 fantastic designers for this 5-week event.  Guidelines of the Row-along can be found here. Along with 4 other designers, I am leading off this fun event that includes free patterns for rows that depict our happy places, and giveaways at each stop.  If you’re new to my blog, welcome!!  In it, I like to share stories of my mostly-quilty life, along with tips and insights.  I hope you’ll visit often, and even subscribe.

My Happy Place Knobie from The Fat Quarter Gypsy

My Happy Place Knobie from The Fat Quarter Gypsy

When Marian proposed this year’s theme of My Happy Place, many thoughts popped into my head.  Quilting is a BIG part of my life.  In fact, I have this terrific Knobie from The Fat Quarter Gypsy hanging on the handle of my longarm.

After all, my heart sings when I’m quilting.  However, several of the other designers selected quilting themes for their rows.  So what, then, should I choose?

Anyone who has followed my blog for more than a few months knows that my second love has to be snowboarding.  But how could I incorporate this into a row??  It would have to be vertical, and include snow-covered mountains, perhaps interspersed with some trees.  I thought of one of my all-time best-selling patterns, featured originally in McCall’s Quilting, then showcased in an 8-part quilt-along series.  McCall’s called it Misty Pines, however I call it Winter Solstice (available here).

PC190 Winter Solstice

Could I make a variation of it?  Absolutely!  Introducing On the Slopes, (click to download) a 12” wide x 30” high row/wall-hanging perfect for your favorite skier or snowboarder.

I gathered a selection of textures from a variety of Northcott collections, including Stonehenge Gradations, Naturescapes, Toscana and Artisan Spirit Shimmer.

I needed 7 different values of grey from snow to medium grey.  After cutting all the pieces, I kept the greys in order for easy reference.

To easily cut the triangle pieces using the template, I butted my ruler up to the edge of the template, then moved it to cut the piece.  This saved me from inadvertently shaving off bits of my template.Butt ruler to the edge of the template

To easily cut the tree fabrics into quarter-square triangles, I aligned the squares on the vertical and horizontal lines on my cutting mat.

Then I gathered the components for each tree block and placed them in stacks for quick assembly.

While sewing the mountain sections, I positioned the patches so that the seams were pressed toward me, thereby preventing them from getting twisted under the feed-dogs on my sewing machine.

I did the same thing when sewing the columns of the quilt together, sewing the columns from bottom to top.

Here is my quilt top, finished except for the applique.

In the pattern, I include appliques for a skier as well as a snowboarder.  I haven’t decided if I’m making this for me (snowboarder) or a friend (skier).  Perhaps I’ll do one of each!  This project took less than a day, so I could easily make another.

I hope you enjoy making this wintery scenic row as much as I enjoyed designing it for you!  Here is a list of the other designers and their blogs.

Well if I revealed my happy place then I’d be saying what my row consists of… but 🙂 I have others… So… my happy place is watching the Olympics… your beautiful wallhanging reminded me how much I love watching them, especially the winter Olympics and Snowboarding is a new favorite sport to watch.

  2. farmquilter September 4, 2018 at 2:00 am #

Thank you for the fabulous row!! My happy place is watching the ocean waves crash on the rocks of the Oregon shore. I could watch the waves for hours and never see the same pattern in the waves twice. Thank you for your wonderful row…reminds me of the times I spent as a kid on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains with my parents and my brother. Blue Planet and Mystic Midnight are my favorites #thankyouNorthcott!!

  3. Quilt Schmilt September 4, 2018 at 3:16 am #

I love On The Slopes. This is my first time doing a Row Along! My happy place is time spent in my studio or time spent with great grandkids, grandkids or hubby. I can’t wait until we get moved and the studio is set up again.

  4. Happy September 4, 2018 at 3:18 am #

My happy place is my breakfast table, watching the birds out the window. Snowboarding is a little too adventurous for me! But I do love the mountains, just in a quieter way. If I were to win, I would love the Robin’s Egg colourway. They are all such great blenders though. Thank you Northcott, it’s an excellent prize!

  5. Michele T September 4, 2018 at 6:42 am #

Love those pieces! My happy place is hiking on the trails in our neck of the woods… I so enjoy being in nature and smelling the freshness! I love both Mystic Twilight or Mystic Midnight!

  6. Elizabeth Coughlin September 4, 2018 at 6:51 am #

Wow gorgeous row! Looking at it, I really feel like I’m out on a crisp Winter’s day surrounded by majestic pines!

  7. Sandy Allen September 4, 2018 at 7:19 am #

Such a fun row! I like it without the applique too!

My happy place is my sewing room. I Get to play with fabric and color and I can tune out the world.

  9. Petra Poorts September 4, 2018 at 7:33 am #

I love your row. Even though I don’t ski (no mountains in Holland;) ) it makes me want to book a holiday to Switserland to learn! I love the Blue Planet palette.

  12. shadesofrandom September 4, 2018 at 8:21 am #

I love your row. Camping is my Happy Place. Hiking through the woods, swimming at the lake, sitting around by the fire, toasting marshmallows, reminiscing, singing campfire songs, going to bed in a sleeping bag under the stars, wondering if anyone else is still awake..

  13. Bonnie Larson September 4, 2018 at 8:24 am #

My Happy place is with my family with a sewing project besidw me. lol. Thanks for a beautiful row. I love either the Slate or planet blue gradations.

  14. Christine September 4, 2018 at 9:37 am #

HI, Patti. My favorite place is our back deck overlooking the pool with the fish pond gurgling beside me. Add some handwork and life can’t get much better! I would choose the Robin’s Egg colourway.

    Thank you. Christine from Ontario

  15. Chelsea September 4, 2018 at 9:59 am #

  17. Irene Plato September 4, 2018 at 10:29 am #

My happy place is in my garden when the weather is good or in me sewing room when it is not. Sometimes I wish for bad weather. I would choose the slate colourway.

  18. Verna A. September 4, 2018 at 10:49 am #

My happy place is my living room in front of my sewing machine (don’t have my own sewing room yet).

My favorite colorway? It’s a toss-up between Mystic Twilight and Mystic Midnight.

  19. Judith September 4, 2018 at 11:11 am #

My happy place is the beach. I don’t get there as often as I want, but when I do, there is such a feeling of freedom. Even though I still have to cook and clean and do all the stuff that I do at home, it just feels different. Love the sound of the surf, the wind, the rain, even, the power of Mother Nature and the air feels so clean to breathe.

  20. Debby P. September 4, 2018 at 11:16 am #

My happy place has always been my garden. I spend happy hours working there while listening to audiobooks or music. I think my choice of gradations would be graphite. Lots of light/dark contrast!

  21. Beth T. September 4, 2018 at 11:39 am #

Oxidized Copper is my favorite colorway. My happy place is my aunt’s home, where she has lived since I was a child.

  22. Cathy B. September 4, 2018 at 12:02 pm #

My happy place is with my grandson – thankfully he loves the outdoors as much as I do. Adore your Winter Solstice, but it’s nice to have this smaller version too! Tough choice, but I think Onyx is my fav.

  23. Connie Kresin Campbell September 4, 2018 at 12:18 pm #

Beautiful row! My happy place is outside in my flower garden, I really like the Oxidized Copper colorway.

  24. Christi September 4, 2018 at 12:23 pm #

I love an ocean. The smell of salt water and the sound of the waves.

  25. Susan September 4, 2018 at 12:29 pm #

Lovely row! I try to be happy wherever I am!

  26. Lisa Marie September 4, 2018 at 1:25 pm #

  27. PJ Miller September 4, 2018 at 1:37 pm #

My happy place is my bathtub. A few bubbles, a scented candle, and a trashy novel (or new quilt magazine) and I’m in heaven. If I should win, please send me the Robin’s Egg colorway.

  28. quilterpt September 4, 2018 at 2:13 pm #

Your row is wonderful! I have a few nieces and nephews that would love it. Thank you! My happy place is in my sewing room. I only keep my favorite things in there that make me happy. Fabric, books, fabric, vintagy things, fabric, miscellaneous collections, fabric, sewing machines, fabric…..

  33. Elizabeth September 4, 2018 at 4:58 pm #

Like you my happy place is the Snow, but I prefer Sliding down Mt Rainer on an innertube. Easier on the body when you run into the trees. I would like the Mystic Twilight if you should draw my Name,
    Thanks, Elizabeth, Silverdale WA

  34. Lynn McIndoe September 4, 2018 at 5:06 pm #

I love your row and the fabrics you chose are perfect. I had a hard time choosing my favourite Nortcott bundle but Mystic Midnight had some lovely blues.
My happy place- in front of my sewing machine.

  35. sewlost September 4, 2018 at 5:29 pm #

  36. Audrey Neufeld September 4, 2018 at 5:37 pm #

My happy place is camping and all that entails. If I can’t be camping, I am happiest sitting on the lake shore in front of my home listening to the water, trees and birds. My favourite Graduations bundle is Mystic Midnight. Thanks for sharing your row pattern. I envision some other appliques such as snow machines and hikers on snowshoes. Also with some colour adjustment this would make a great frame for hikers, campers, etc.

  37. Michele W September 4, 2018 at 5:37 pm #

My happy place is on our deck, listening to the birds, chatting with people passing by, and quilting! I am loving Mystic Twilight…. and also Mystic Midnight, so if I were the lucky winner, I’d probably have to toss a coin to decide!

  38. Janet T September 4, 2018 at 6:19 pm #

In front of my sewing machine, with no one else home to bother me, and the phone turned off so the telemarketers don’t bother me all day!!

    • Janet T September 8, 2018 at 12:22 am #

      Love the oxidized copper colors.

  39. Sheila of WhiteBearQuilts September 4, 2018 at 6:25 pm #

I love your row! My happy place, besides my studio would be the beach! We moved from Florida to Kentucky, so not many beaches here! But the mountains are beautiful.

  40. Susan Green September 4, 2018 at 8:33 pm #

My happy place is sitting with my quilting hoop, hand quilting or needle-turn appliqueing. I think I would choose Mystic Twilight. Thank you!

  41. Beth B September 4, 2018 at 8:37 pm #

  52. vivoaks September 5, 2018 at 12:03 am #

Thanks so much for your hard work on your row and giving us a chance to win some goodies!! I’d have to think on it a bit to come up with my happy place…. Maybe when I’m at the pipe organ at church, playing to my heart’s content, with no one around. If people are there listening, it makes me nervous and I don’t like to practice like that. What can I say? Leave me by myself and let me do my thing!! 🙂

  53. dezertsuz September 5, 2018 at 12:21 am #

What a great idea! Thanks so much for the effort you put into your row and for joining the row along. I love mountains, so this design is great, even with no appliqué at all.

    • dezertsuz September 5, 2018 at 12:24 am #

Oh, and my happy place would be camping in the mountains! I think that I’d need Blue Planet for that.

Oops! I forgot about mentioning my happy place, as I got so inspired by seeing yours. I love to go hiking in the mountains, in the summer of course. I don’t live anywhere near the mountains, so I live vicariously by looking that the hiking photos that my brothers post on Facebook. If I should win the giveaway prize, I love the “Slate” colorway. (Thank you Northcott Fabrics!)
