Fellow Quilters,
Today I am joining a talented group of designers participating in the latest blog tour for Quiltmakers 100 Blocks. Issue #16 hits newsstands this week, and to celebrate, Quiltmakers magazine has organized a blog tour, with lots of great prizes at each blog. There are also prizes at Quiltmakers’ blog, so be sure to comment on their site for a chance to win some great quilty stuff.
It’s hard to believe that 1600 different blocks have been designed since “100 Blocks” first started! I have had fun designing some of the blocks in past issues, as well as designing some quilts using blocks from the various issues. Some of my quilt designs have even appeared in issues of “Quilts From 100 Blocks”, and a few of these quilts were results of my blog posts in the ”100 Blocks” tours.
For the latest issue, I played with a selection of blocks created by the designers who used Northcott fabrics in their blocks. They included Acquisitions Editor Lori Baker with her block #1554 Is It Butter Yet?, Northcott pattern designer Sue Beevers with her block #1556 Directional Debut, Northcott pattern designer Chris Hoover with her block #1571 Stand Tall, and Northcott colleague Elaine Theriault with her block #1593 Any Which Way. I also added #1557 Stars & Stripes by Karen Bialik, another Northcott pattern designer. I colored the blocks in Northcott’s Stonehenge Gradations Mixers, featured in Northcott’s advertisement in the issue. Each Mixer contains a mix of colors from Stonehenge Gradations, making them super useful and super gorgeous! I selected 3 Mixers containing purples, blues and greens, as well as one containing magenta/orange.
The real fun began, however, when I combined the blocks. So many choices! Should I choose a straight set, or an on-point layout? Sashing between the blocks or not? Light ground or dark ground? 
While all the blocks played nicely in a straight set, some were destined for this arrangement – Lori’s and Karen’s, for example. 
The others worked well in both arrangements, and some even gave some wonderful surprising effects when placed on-point. I really enjoyed working with combinations of Sue’s and Chris’ blocks.
I know that Lori and Elaine like modern quilting, and their blocks reflect this. Since I like modern quilting too, I played with their blocks a bit more. Here are 2 options of their blocks in a quilt, with and without sashing – what a difference the sashing makes!
I also had some fun with Elaine’s block on its own.

I like Elaines #1593 option 2. A common layout with an uncommon block. I also like the Stonehenge fabrics in the blocks.
I love making quilts on the computer, its so fast!
I love 1556 &1571, option 3 with sashing. The colours are stunning and the centre block is outstanding.One’s eye just travels smoothly all over the quilt, creating a feeling of excitement.
Quiltmakers 100 Blocks always has such interesting new ideas. Your ways of combining and laying out blocks is inspiring. I would say that #1556 and 1571 Option #5 (on point with light ground) is my favorite. I love the Indian feel it has.
Weii, since I like Modern too I felt the striped block fit the category best. So block 1593, option #1 works for me.
I really like 1554 and 1593 but who can choose?
All of the quilts are beautiful, but I would have to say I like 1593 option 2 the best. Thanks!
WOW!! I think you have the BEST job in the world!! How do we choose just one layout, when they are all winners? I think for me, I would pick option 5 of the combination of 1556 and 1571. I am in love with Sue’s block, #1556 – so intricate! Thank you for sharing Patti!
What beautiful options! It has taken me awhile to decide which layout I like best. I have finally decided I like option three with the sashing (Lori and Karen) in the first set of layouts you presented.
I’m a fan of sashing and on point as a rule. This was difficult, because they are all so pretty. My first choice is 1554/1593 option 2. And I love those colors together. Thanks.
1556 and 1571 option 5 is my favorite. It was really hard to pick, though! Love the options with the arrow blocks, too.

I like the movement in #1593 option 2 using Elaine’s block. The colours in the line of fabric are enticing and would be fun to work with.
All are pretty. But 1557 & 1593 option #1 , I would make.
It is amazing how many variations there are . I really like # 1593, both options.
I like #1571 on its own.
I like the modern look of #1557 & #1593, but option #1 with more colour saturation. All great blocks!
I always look forward to the new edition of the Quiltmaker’s Blocks. There is so much eye candy in each issue! My favorite is #1593 Option 2 Straight Set. The chevron look is still appealing to me!

Ooooh, there are at least 4 options I would like to try. I will vote for 1554 & 1593, opt 1. What a great way to get my brain started on a Monday morning.
All the quilts are beautiful, but #1593 option 2 has certainly captured my attention with its’ modern appeal.

I love the fresh look of !554 & 1593 option #2. Makes me think of a fresh blanket of snow, a clear blue sky, and ….look, over there…a splash of colour.
These are so fun. My favourites are 1556 & 1557 option #5 and 1571.

I like all the fun ideas but I will choose option 1556 & 1571 option 5.
I like #1593 Option #2 (straight set). It has a fun vibe, especially with the Stonehenge fabric.
I love how you showed different settings of the blocks. It is inspirational. My favorite was Lori’s #1554 & Elaine’s # 1593 option 2
Hi Patti. Looking forward to picking up Volume 16. Always fresh with new ideas. Love love love Stonehenge Graduations. Favourite pattern is the last one, # 1593 as it is different from usual chevrons. I have been wanting to do a chevron baby quilt and now I know which pattern I’m doing. Thanks Patti.
I love #1593, Option 2. The fact that this zig zag design comes from a straight set is icing on the cake.

I love #1556 & 1571 Option 5. Beautiful colours on a crisp white background. I’ve been drawn to flying geese type blocks lately. But it was hard to choose!
I really love the fabrics so it’s hard to look beyong the yummy colours to the actual pattern, but I think I like options 2 and 4. I would love to make either one of them.
Hmmm…it’s a toss up – I like 1557&1593 Option 1 and 1554&1593 Option 1 equally.
I like them all, but #1557 and #1593 option 1 is my favorite! 🙂

I like 157 +1593 #2 with sashing. It reminds me of the Fourth of July and since the weather is mixed rain and snow….that sounds good at the moment. I did like all of them and it was fun to see what the different blocks made in combination. Thanks for sharing.
