Welcome to my second post today! My regular subscribers are probably
scratching their heads right now, thinking “Did she fall and bump her head?” because I NEVER post twice in one day. Well, you know what they say – Never say never. There is a very good reason for 2 posts today – I am wearing 2 hats as Northcott and I participate in Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 15 blog tour, taking place this week. My first post was for Northcott’s participation as a sponsor of the tour. This post is because I have a block in the issue – woop-woop!
#1454 Diamond Cut block
My block is #1454 Diamond Cut, made with Northcott’s uber-delicious Artisan Spirit Shimmer. It has just a hint of metallic gold – enough to make it shimmer (haha) but not enough to make it at all challenging to work with. I have made numerous quilts with Shimmer, and they all turn out drop-dead gorgeous because of the fabric.
The Diamond Cut block is similar to the block that I used for my Bevels quilt featured in the November 2015 issue of McCall’s Quick Quilts.

However, I added corners that create a secondary design when multiple blocks are sewn together. Using 2 different values of one color gives the distinct impression of shading in the fabrics, creating an optical illusion.

In this alternate colorway version, I used multiple colors and placed them on a black ground, using one color (gray) for the corner pieces.

In the 3rd version, I used a light (cream) ground instead of black as above.

I also played with a few other blocks in Volume 15 that had a central on-point square motif. While there were several in the issue, only 2 had the same grid as Diamond Cut – #1464 Checkerboard Square and #1474 Nine Patch Palette. Here is Diamond Grid with Nine Patch Palette, and then with the corner squares of Nine Patch Palette recolored. What a difference!

Diamond Grid didn’t play as well with Checkerboard Square in my opinion.

I also combined Checkerboard Square with Nine Patch Palette, both with and without recolored corners.

As I write this post, I recall writing a similar post for Volume 13 which came out around this time last year and which also featured one of my blocks. It was a crazy-busy time, particularly because, while returning to Canada from a Florida vacation, I had to make an unplanned multi-day stop in Paducah, Kentucky to join my colleagues in the Northcott booth at AQS Quiltweek. I did not have any of the clothes or shoes that I needed to wear at the show (cycling shorts, golf clothes and swimsuits were NOT appropriate), so I called my son at home and walked him through my closet via the telephone as he pulled out the required dresses, matching shoes and jewellery, and Fedex’d them to me. Remarkably, he managed to select all the right ones!

I really like all your versions! I think #3 is my favorite, though.
Love the story about having your son fedex you clothes–what a great son to do that! I think mine would run the other way!

My favorite is quilt #3. I like the colors and how they seem to stand out for me. With the black background they seem to recede.
My favorite is quilt number 4. I love the white space and the way the “shimmering” blocks seem to float

Quilt #4 is my favorite. If I called my sons asking for clothes, they’d tell me to go shopping!
They are all beautiful! I really like quilt 1 due to the optical illusion effect but quilt 5 is also really nice. You can’t beat the shimmer fabrics of Northcott!

This is a hard decision as they are all pretty, but I’ve finally settled on number three. I like the multi-colored look.
Beautiful block. It’s a tossup between quilts 4 and 5 at the moment. I can’t make up my mind.
I am amazed at the progression of the design from so simple and stunning to very complicated. I love #6, as I seem to end up doing things a bit more complicated than the easier simple designs. They each have their own beauty.

It’s so hard to choose, but my pick is #6. I love the yellow color and how the blocks are positioned. It is fun to see all the different block choices using one color.

This is hard to decide. It’s a toss up between #1 and #5. (but I like #3 as well for a more colorful version.) I love that shimmer fabric!

Patti, no way is there just one quilt design to love, I love them all? You block is awesome and your use of the fabric makes the blocks just GLOW! Can’t imagine being able to re-create your beautiful quilts without the fabric. Will be going out to get Number 15! Those magazines fly off the shelf and will probably have to search the stores!

I like quilt #3. I like how the white/cream sets off the colors, making them bright without being too bright. Thank you for your block.
My favorite is Quilt #1, followed by Quilt #3. They have 3D dimension to them. The more checker board, the flatter the design becomes. And, that you used yellow/gold is unusual. I have learned that a little yellow in a quilt goes a long way, but using it as the sole color against the white background — very nice.
It’s difficult to choose with so many options but I really like quilt 2
This looks like a fabric must have in my stash! Great effects. I’m tossed between Quilt 4 and 8, but favouring the strong diagonal lines in # 8 created by recolouring the corners.
I also like #1…..simple design shows off the fabrics!
I like quilt #4 the best. Also like the versatility of your block and the fact that I could definitely accomplish it.

Although I like the simplicity of quilt # 1, the addition of the colours in quilt # 3 would definitely make a large quilt more interesting. My choice is # 3.
Layout number 5 is my favorite.
Hi Patti! I like quilt #5 because it has a secondary jewel and a nine patch that is a basic block that sets of the “Jazzy Jewels!” This quilt has more light background and is more pronounced than in the other quilts thereby giving me a chance enjoy all three of the blocks! I love the yellow and lighter colors so it gives it a soft classy look to the quilt.
It is a very difficult decision to make. Quilt #8 is one of the favourites.
I liked #1 with the shadows made by using the two colors, I must try that, with blues.
#2 and #3 are also very eye catching, great block in so many ways, thanks for giveaway.
I like #1 quilt lay out. Very interesting to see other blocks used with your block. That would be fun to try.

The colors of #3 speak to me! I have always liked lots of color especially blue.

Strangely enough I prefer Quilt #3–multicolor on white. Somehow it makes the diamod colors stand out more.
My favourite is #4. It is less cluttered and has lots of interest for the eye

I love #2 and #5…. I love secondary designs and the feel of the Irish Chain that they have. And I adore the dark background option–jewel tones and star patterns pop right out, like stars in a night sky. Especially with the shimmer Artisan. Shimmer and tone-on-tone marbles are my favorite fabrics to work with!
