Fellow Quilters,sponsor blog tour button

Today is my lucky day, and yours too!  This week is the blog tour for Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 15, and not only is Northcott a sponsor, but I also have a block in the issue.  The good news for you is that you get 2 chances to win a copy of this great issue chock full of creative blocks – one chance for commenting on this post and one for commenting on my block post.

I really enjoy writing the Northcott post – it allows me to stretch my creative muscle by recreating some of the blocks and making them with the fabric collection featured in the Northcott ad in this issue.  This time around it is Little Genius (Little Genius ), part of the Tiny Treasures series of small-scale prints.  Little Genius is also a Quilts for Kids collection, benefitting Quilts for Kids (http://www.quiltsforkids.org/ ), a non-profit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of children who suffer from abuse or life-threatening illnesses.  Quilters are so kind-hearted and generous with their time, regularly making quilts that aid those people less fortunate.  Coincidentally, my modern guild had a charity sewing day last month, and we made a quilt with various house blocks for a local facility that provides support for families living with cancer.

With that in mind, I selected any blocks in Volume 15 that looked like houses, whether they were traditional or not.  This included #1441 Tree Houses, #1449 Beach House, #1495 Adventure Seeker (it is a teepee), and #1499 Candy Box (it reminded me of modular housing).  Since, as quilters, we like these quilts to be quick and easy, I also selected some of the easier blocks, such as #1411 Diamond Twist and #1489 Offset.  I noted that #1489 Offset looked like a low-rise apartment.  With 6 different blocks in all, I had lots of options.

I then set to work recoloring them in Little Genius, keeping the background the same in all blocks to maintain cohesiveness.  Here they are!

Little Genius blocks

Then I set them into a variety of quilts, creating 6 different options.  The first one has 2 each of all 6 blocks, with the lengthwise border stripe used for the outer border.  I added sashing to minimize the varying grids in the blocks.  It looks like a sampler quilt.

Quilt #1 - all 6 blocks

Quilt #1

In Quilt #2, I used the 4 main “house” blocks, keeping the sashing and border.  I think you would agree that the result is somewhat less “sampler-y”.

Quilt #2 - the 4 house blocks

Quilt #2

Quilt #3 has just the 2 main “house” blocks, and I like this version a lot.

Quilt #4 - the 2 main house blocks

Quilt #3

I used only the teepee and apartment blocks in Quilt #4, changing the block ground to solid cream, and it has a cleaner, more modern look.

Quilt #5 - teepee & apartment with cream ground & non-stripe border

Quilt #4

In the final quilt, I used the 2 more modern “houses” (the modular one and the apartment one) and used a less-busy print in the border.  The effect is quite grid-like, and appeals to the modern quilter in me.

Quilt #6 - modular & apartment blocks with plainer border & solid cream ground

Quilt #5

I am having a tough time deciding which one is my favorite, so I’m asking for your help.  For a chance to win a packet of Little Genius fabrics and a copy of “100 Blocks Volume 15”, please post a comment to this blog by midnight tomorrow Friday May 5th telling me which quilt is your favorite.  I’ll randomly select 3 winners.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to my blog, and this post on behalf of Northcott.  Please check out my other post today as one of the block designers – you’ll be glad you did!  For more chances to win a copy of “100 Blocks Volume 15”, be sure to visit the other blogs in the tour as well.

Cheers,

Patti

I think either 3 or 4 is my favourite!
I’m going through my scraps drawer by drawer colour by colour, making a variety of blocks using the same pattern. I have made 8 purple blocks from a variety of more modern books and have fabric pulled for the next series of the same blocks. Not sure how they will be combined, but it appeals to my ADD brain!
    Lol
Need to work fast so I can go shopping again!!

  2. slomo2017 May 4, 2017 at 1:19 am #

I think they are all terrific, but my preference is Block 5.

  3. sanpot May 4, 2017 at 2:55 am #

I just love ‘house’ blocks, although have yet to make a quilt that is just houses. I think my favourite is number one.

  4. Michelle Price May 4, 2017 at 5:40 am #

Hi Patti, I really like quilt sampler 3, because each block has a house. My second favorite is the first option because it looks more like a sampler quilt. The fabric colours are beautiful and cheerful! You must have had fun making these!

  5. Sherry Southgate May 4, 2017 at 5:53 am #

My fave is quilt # 4.

  6. Carol J May 4, 2017 at 6:49 am #

I have a confession to make… I am not much of a ‘house’ lover when it comes to quilting. That doesn’t mean I don’t like looking at them, it just means that the chances of me making one are pretty slim lol. My favourite quilt is #1, because it does take on the look of a sampler quilt. Thank you for sharing Patti!!

  7. Gail May 4, 2017 at 7:07 am #

Hard to choose – but #3 is my favourite.

  8. KT May 4, 2017 at 7:09 am #

  9. Joan Reed May 4, 2017 at 7:23 am #

  18. Susan Conner May 4, 2017 at 8:11 am #

    Version #3 is my favorite!

  24. Marie Woodhouse May 4, 2017 at 9:10 am #

    Dear Patti,
The blocks are all very creative and the way they are set in the quilts makes me like Quilt 1 (like a sample style) & Quilt 5 ( a modern look using these two blocks). the fabrics are bright and cheery! I love all the blocks, so I don’t have a favorite. Candy Box & Off Set go together nicely, however the Candy Box and Diamond Twist would also look wonderful.
Thank you for sharing and Someone is going to be a Winner!

  25. Marsha May 4, 2017 at 9:14 am #

They are all lovely but I have to go with quilt 1 because I like the diamond twist block!

  36. Barbara Young May 4, 2017 at 11:28 am #

I like Quilt #3 with just the houses. It’s like a little city. Maybe you could turn the sashing into little roads.

  37. Judith Lazo May 4, 2017 at 11:38 am #

Oooh, I love the tree house and beach house, quilt #3. Mainly because I had a quasi tree house when I was a kid and loved climbing the trees to the top and after many years finally got my beach house. Perfect combination. My beach house is decorated in aquas and golds. Fun quilt to hang there.

  38. Tina May 4, 2017 at 11:49 am #

I like quilt 1. A little of everything. Thanks

  39. peggycooperquilts May 4, 2017 at 12:06 pm #

#3 the houses and trees look just right!!! drhodes9@cox.net

  42. Nancy Green May 4, 2017 at 12:17 pm #

  43. Myra May 4, 2017 at 12:20 pm #

Block #2 is my preference. I like the diagonal motion.
    Keep up the great work.

My favourite is quilt #3. But all are really cute!

  53. Mary O. May 4, 2017 at 1:58 pm #

  54. Nan B May 4, 2017 at 2:02 pm #

Hi Patti, Number 3 is my favorite design. It is nice and clean. You have a neat job!

  55. Lisa Marie May 4, 2017 at 2:12 pm #

I am very into house quilts lately — quilt #3 with all the houses is my favorite.

  56. Debra Rolfe May 4, 2017 at 2:33 pm #

I like quilt 3 the best. I have been collecting house blocks lately. I really want to create my own layout with the houses around the outside, with something different in the center. I know I have seen patterns similar to this, and I guess they resonate with me.

  57. Allison in Alabama May 4, 2017 at 2:44 pm #

Quilt #4 is my fav!!! I like the balance of the two blocks!

  58. Laura May 4, 2017 at 2:46 pm #

My favorite is quilt 4. It was a hard decision, but in the end, the simple balance in this quilt appealed to me.

  59. Nancy C May 4, 2017 at 2:57 pm #

My favorite is #1 ! Although they are all beautiful.

  60. Linda Daute May 4, 2017 at 3:07 pm #

    My favorite is # 2.

  61. Patsy Burroughs May 4, 2017 at 3:44 pm #

Number 2 is my favorite. Although you did not use all patterns, I love the random “slant way” that you set the individual patterns, very pleasing and still very colorful. But all were very ‘thoughtful’ in their placement.

  62. glorybquilts May 4, 2017 at 3:55 pm #

I do like all of them, however I think my favourite is #1. I do like scrappy quilts.

  63. Pam May 4, 2017 at 4:17 pm #

    Hi Patty,
Quilt 4 has an organic quality in its simplicity and at the same time it reflects much more than homes or houses. The triangular tepee, surrounded by triangular green woods, near lakes of blue, contrasts sharply with the rigid, straight lines of the apartment atop a flat green strip of grass. Nature with man made, the evolution of homes, living with nature, removing nature, our continuous evolution as a country, a welcoming place and space for all: the home represents the essence of Canada. A great quilt to celebrate our 150th! Well done Patty – Quilt number 4 is my choice!

  64. Rochelle May 4, 2017 at 4:20 pm #

I like the variety in quilt #1. The advantage to the other quilts in not having to master additional blocks. But I think the variety of houses speak to all children.

  65. Janet T May 4, 2017 at 4:21 pm #

I like #2 the best. Love the trees.

  66. Whiskers May 4, 2017 at 4:26 pm #

It is NOT a good day to make decisions. But, if I must, I go with #5, but I do like #3 and #4 as well. Something about the teepee block is appealing.

  67. Jayne P May 4, 2017 at 5:00 pm #

I do like them all but I would choose quilt 3 as my favourite

  68. Darlene Mangum May 4, 2017 at 5:27 pm #

Quilt 3 kept drawing my attention!
    What happy fabrics…

  69. Cecilia May 4, 2017 at 5:34 pm #

It’s a toss up between #1 and #3. I love the colors you chose.

  70. Pat K May 4, 2017 at 5:36 pm #

This was a very difficult choice because all of the quilts are wonderful, but finally decided on quilt #3. Love the colorful fabrics and your use of the blocks — you can’t help but smile when looking at your quilts.

  71. Vicki H May 4, 2017 at 5:37 pm #

    I am going for #3.

  72. Sandy K May 4, 2017 at 5:38 pm #

    Definitely number 3.!

  75. Maureen May 4, 2017 at 6:36 pm #

  76. Jane Shier May 4, 2017 at 7:09 pm #

Quilt number 3 is my favourite.

I like #3 house quilt it could be paired with #1474 from Vol15 Quiltmaker.

  86. CateD May 4, 2017 at 9:39 pm #

Tough to make a choice, but I am going with number 4.

  87. JoyceLM May 4, 2017 at 10:40 pm #

Tough choice, but Quilt #1 is my favorite with #5 a close second. Thanks.

  88. Brenda E. May 4, 2017 at 10:54 pm #

Quilt #4 is a modern take on a more traditional sampler and I think that is why really like that one.

  89. Joy P May 4, 2017 at 11:29 pm #

While I really like quilt #3 I think my fav is #1. All of the blocks are great.

  90. Elizabeth Engman May 4, 2017 at 11:32 pm #

Once again my choice is Quilt # 3, using only 2 of the blocks.

  91. Angela Short May 5, 2017 at 12:03 am #

I like quilt 2 the best. Very pretty quilt layouts! angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom

  92. Nicole Sender May 5, 2017 at 12:09 am #

#1 is my favorite. It was hard to make a choice!

  93. Rachell Reilly May 5, 2017 at 12:35 am #

I like 2 and 3 the best. The one with the tepees and homes feel like camping in my backyard as a child…adventurous but safe at the same time. # 3 feels like a cozy, secluded mountainous neighborhood, and I like the consistency and well-ordered look.

  94. Águeda May 5, 2017 at 12:40 am #

I love number one. For me is the best. Thank you.

  95. Pamela Reim May 5, 2017 at 1:04 am #

My vote is #3 altho I would like to see #5 in a different set of fabrics. Thanks for sharing them.

  96. Sandy Walther May 5, 2017 at 1:11 am #

My vote is quilt design #4. I like how the trees highlight the stripe, and the print for the background is lovely.

  97. Barb K. May 5, 2017 at 1:17 am #

    I liked Quilt #4–neat looking!

  98. Beth T. May 5, 2017 at 1:47 am #

I’m surprised to see that I’m one of the few who likes #2 the best. It has a “neighborhood” feel to it, which really appeals to me.

  99. Tu-Na Quilts, Travels, and Eats May 5, 2017 at 2:08 am #

Quilt #3 looks like a friendly little city to me. kthurn@bektel.com

  100. Theresa MacLean May 5, 2017 at 5:43 am #

    I like Quilt #3 best!

  101. Monica R. May 5, 2017 at 9:15 am #

Hmmmm I think it would be between Quilt #3 and #5. I love the background fabric.

  102. Mimi Patrick May 5, 2017 at 10:48 am #

I like them all but #3 is my favorite,, I want to put little people coming out of the houses, too 🙂

  103. Margaret Handlin May 5, 2017 at 6:02 pm #

I agree with Mimi, I love them all but #3 is the best..

  104. Stacey Martin May 5, 2017 at 6:40 pm #

I love #3 because it could be done scrappy or in 2 colors. I like the houses together and not a fan of the contemporary apartment. The tee pee would be adorable with an alternating arrow block I think. But then….everyone had their own preferences. Hope that helped you some.

  105. Cathie May 5, 2017 at 10:22 pm #

    I like #3
