It is Tuesday today, and that means that it is my day to blog as part of the Quiltmakers 100 Blocks Volume 13 blog tour. The tour lasts all week, with 7 pattern designer bloggers each day. I am wearing 2 hats today – I am blogging as a sponsor of the tour (Northcott provides some prizes for you to win) AND I have a block in this issue – woop, woop! 
The issue is just hitting newsstands, and the blog tour is a great sneak peek at what’s inside. I have an advance copy, and let me tell you, it’s good!
My block is #1319, Going to Class. It has a school of fish, and the fish are swimming in opposite directions. It reminds me of when I was in high school and there was a 5 minute window to get from one class to the next – everyone was racing in opposite directions! Hence the name Going to Class.

Normally in my blog posts for 100 Blocks, I recolor my and a few other blocks and combine them to see what happens. However, this time my block did not play nicely with the other blocks. I scanned the issue looking for designers that I know, and spotted Chris Hoover’s #1341 Morning Glory block. I recolored it in the Eagle Pass collection that Northcott is showing in this issue. I came up with 2 color options – I think I prefer the green one.

Scanning the issue, I saw Deborah Johnson’s #1380 Piper’s Puzzle. Recoloring it gave me this.

Next, I combined the two. I’m not really liking it.

What if I change the background to make it the same in both blocks? Still not liking it.
Okay, what if I designed a quilt around the panel from the collection? This collection is digitally printed, so the detail in the designs is so realistic. Northcott featured this collection in our booth at Quilt Festival last week, and the attendees loved it! They came right up close to examine the detail in the fabric. For my next attempt, I put the panel in the center and put blocks in the border. Here are 2 options. I’m liking it more, but I think I can do better.
My final version has some additional inner borders to separate the panel and the blocks so that both stand out. It is double/queen size now, 86” x 96”, and I’m liking it a lot. It’s a real guy quilt. With 2 sons, guy quilts are popular at my house.

I’d make one for my son. I made one for him years ago and it is pretty worn. He’s asked for another so I think it’s time I get to it!
I would make a guy quilt for my niece. I made a camping themed quilt for my nephew and now my niece wants one too! These fabrics would be just the ticket for a nice camping quilt for her. Congratulations on making the magazine again. My SIL studied salmon in college, so your block would make a great quilt for her!
When I saw the announcement for this Eagle Pass panel last week, I quickly set about using Northcott’s wonderful online search feature to find out which quilt shops were carrying this panel. Unfortunately there where no quilt shops nearby that had the panel in stock, however I did find a shop in Listowel (2 hours away) called Pins and Needles – and I called and they’ve put a hold on it until my granddaughter who lives in Listowel can pick it up this week. I want the panel to make a throw for my grandson who’s life verse is: “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31.
I too have a “guy” house, but one of them has (finally) moved out. So…my choice would be to make a quilt for the guy of my heart, my hubbie, just…cause! Besides, it’s about time that I design a quilt for him and not with me or my likes in mind. Don’t you agree?

Oh, what a fun block! Those fish do remind me of the halls in high school! I think we had 7 minutes between classes and it was hard to make it sometimes.
The eagle quilt would be much loved in my family. My family has 4 eagle scouts in it, so we are always on the look out for things with eagles.

I also have two sons and a husband, so I know what you mean about living in a guy’s house. I would make this for my husband as I have never made a quilt specifically just for him.
Well, I would have to say first would have to be my hubby. He drives for a living and is away from home a lot. The truck is his apartment so a quilt would be a nice touch of home. Then would be my son-in-laws. I don’t know if they would appreciate them, but my one SIL is a cancer survivor, so I think he would be next in line. But I have to finish the projects for the girls first LOL Love your fishies Patti!!
My son-in-law just got home from Long Bow hunting in Montana and he would love it if I made him a quilt made with this wildlife theme fabric.
I can see using this fabric to make a landscape quilt. Wonderful fabric.

I would make a guy quilt for my son in law. My daughter and son in law love to wrap up in blankets after getting home from work He would love a guy lap quilt to wrap up in.
Your bordered panel with sky background is so beautiful, and as you said lifelike. I think it is a great quilt for not just guys, but females who love the great outdoors and soaring eagles like me.

wow your quilts are wonderful. I would make a lap quilt for my son. He has always been so into eagles. He has always had them all around his bed room and later his college apt and now in his den. When he got his Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony, his grandmother asked him if he would like a gift or money. Without pause he said “An eagle please” LOL

I like the combination of the two blocks and it will make a wonderful design. I think you used the “stone” fabric too much. Punch up the contrast and I think you will be surprised.

Gorgeous and definitely manly fabrics, blocks and overall quilt design. This definitely inspires me to make a quilt for my brother-in-law. He worked his entire career in Alaska for Federal Fish & Game and a true outdoorsman and naturalist. Recently retired and moved to Washington, but no longer able to live out his dream of retirement as his 60 year old wife has a rare and severe form of Dementia and he is has become an amazing care giver, who loves his wife and honors his commitment of marriage – till death do we part. They are in a new home, which could definitely use such a manly quilt as these fabrics and designs compliment his decor so well. Yeap, they definitely inspire me to make this for him.

I’ve made a quilt for my guy last Christmas. I’ve made queen sized quilts for my three Grand sons who live in Ottawa from the Canadiana line after seeing how much they were affected by an incident at our National war memorial. I’ve made numerous quilts of Valor but I think I’d make the eagle quilt for a special veteran.

I would make a quilt for my hubby who is my best friend. He is also a vet, and has been having some health ussues this year. He deserves some of this gorgeous fabric. I have some eagle panels that I need to add to to make a nice wall hanging for his den, or to use as a lap quilt in the evenings in front of the tv.

One of my quilty BFFs is engaged to a man who loves eagles. A quilt with this fabric would be perfect for him! I know she would love to make it for him, but right now he is battling cancer and that has them both busy and focused on all things medical. I would love to be able to make it and give it to them. And I’ll bet I could save some leftover fabrics for my friend to sew something when life gets back to normal. I think your bordered panel design is gorgeous!

I love your finished product and I love the wood and rocks febrics. I love to make landscape quilts and haven’t seem any new earthy type fabrics for a while. How soon will they be available? I would make a guy quilt for my hubby as he has learned to love quilts and how warm and beautiful they can be. Plus he supports me in all my endeavors. I also have two special nephews for whom I would love to make quilts–one is awaiting a kidney and pancreas transplant and the other is battling Cystic Fibrosis.
I like how you combined your block with others and making the quilt using the eagle panel. My father is a WWII veteran and was a prisoner of war in Germany. I would make it for him for his 95th birthday.
