Earth Rhythms Rocks 100 Blocks

18 Nov

Fellow Quilters,

Today is my first day in sunny Florida, after a 3-day road trip driving my mom down to her winter home from Toronto.  It is also my day to post as part of the Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Volume 10 Blog Tour.  How fabulous to be sitting outside in balmy weather to write this!

This issue of “100 Blocks” means that 1000 unique blocks have been custom designed for Quiltmakers’ readers – quite an accomplishment, I think.  I have participated in several of the blog tours and it has been great fun playing with many of these designs.  For this issue I again jumped at the chance to play.  I scanned the issue for blocks by designers who design patterns in partnership with Northcott, and found 4 – #961 by Karen Bialik, #976 by Chris Hoover, #989 by Celine Perkins & #998 by Shayla Wolf.

I recreated the 4 blocks above in Electric Quilt.  Then I downloaded the fabric collection that is featured in Northcott’s advertisement in this issue (Stonehenge Earth Rhythms).  It is so easy to download fabric collections into EQ7 from Northcott’s website – simply click on the “Download Fabrics for EQ” button.  I know that the quilt that I create in EQ7 will look identical to the real thing, without cutting into any fabric.  I can switch fabrics until I am happy with the final result, then start cutting.

Karen’s block was actually easiest for me to design as a quilt.

Karen's block

Karen’s block

It is so pretty in the Artisan Spirit Shimmer fabrics that Karen chose for her block.  Here’s my version using Earth Rhythms.

Karen sent me a sneak peek of a quilt that she has designed that uses her block, and it is stunning.  I think it will be featured in the next issue of “Quilts From 100 Blocks”.  Karen is a prolific designer, and her designs for Northcott continually impress me!  Not only does she design patterns, she also runs a terrific quilts shop, The Fabric Addict, in Lethbridge, AB.

Chris Hoover is also a talented prolific designer, and she also used Artisan Spirit Shimmer for her block.

Chris' block

Chris’ block

Chris designed Northcott’s 2013 Block of the Month program with the Shimmer collection.

Here is Chris’ block in Earth Rhythms.

Celine's block

Celine’s block

Celine Perkins has had a block included in “100 Blocks” for as long as I can remember, and I enjoy playing with her blocks.

Here is my Earth Rhythms version.

Shayla's block

Shayla’s block

Shayla Wolf and her mom Kristi are Sassafras Lane, a fairly new pattern company.  Shayla is young, and her designs tend to be modern, so I was not surprised to see that her block for “100 Blocks” was modern.

Here is my version with Earth Rhythms.

Of course I had to play with the blocks in some different layouts.

Chris', Celine's & Karen's blocks in a quilt

Chris’, Celine’s & Karen’s blocks in a quilt

Shayla's block in a quilt

Shayla’s block in a quilt

And of course I always give away fabrics, and the folks at Quiltmaker are giving me a copy of “100 Blocks Volume 10” to give away as well.  So…. for a chance to win the magazine and some Stonehenge Earth Rhythms fabric, please post a comment on my blog by noon tomorrow, telling me your favorite BLOCK and QUILT in this post.  Please visit the other blogs in the tour as well, and happy Quiltmaking!

Cheers,

Patti

I like Shayla’s block. When I first saw the block I could not envision it in a quilt…but the arrangement in your quilt is great. Tectonic Plates would be my name for the quilt.

My favorite block is Karen’s block while my favorite quilt is Chris’, Celine’s & Karen’s blocks in a quilt. We certainly need a quilt in OK today. It was to be 12 degrees this morning. Since I don’t have to venture out early today, I am not. I’m thrilled that you can sit outside today for a change. Thanks for the opportunity to win a terrific magazine and showing us some great eye candy to motivate us.

Karen’s block is my favourite block, but the quilt of Shayla’s block is my favourite quilt. That fabric is just stunning!
Lucky you being out of the deep freeze that is Toronto right now!

  20. Marguerite Gobeil November 18, 2014 at 1:21 pm #

I am quite attracted to Shayla’s block simply because it is different. I tend to quilt traditional patterns, but when a take on modern comes up but still seems to conform to the standards of symmetry and balance, I quite like that. I did note, however, that one of Shayla’s blocks in her quilt points in a different direction. Was that a mistake or intentional to draw attention to the “one is not quite like the others” school of thought?

  21. Marian November 18, 2014 at 1:26 pm #

  128. Nancy November 18, 2014 at 9:19 pm #

I like Celine’s block and the quilt with her block is the one I like best. Stonehenge is putting out some great fabrics.

  129. Debra Pugh November 18, 2014 at 9:33 pm #

It would be really hard to pick just one because they all are very versatile. but if I must pick just one it would be Earth Rythms.

  130. Veronika November 18, 2014 at 9:42 pm #

I like shaylas block but I like the other quilt because there’s more variety. Mostly the fabric is just so stunning!

  131. Sharon Gallegos November 18, 2014 at 9:42 pm #

They are all great blocks but Karen’s block would have to be my favorite. My favorite quilt is the quilt that features that block along with Kris and Celine’s blocks. It is stunning!

  132. marta November 18, 2014 at 9:43 pm #

Karen’s block is my favorite block. That fabric is just stunning!…marta

  133. Bronwyn hobson November 18, 2014 at 9:47 pm #

Chris’, Celine’s & Karen’s blocks in a quilt. Love it. So many different designs that ape you to get lost in thought.

  134. duchick November 18, 2014 at 9:52 pm #

I really like the angles and asymmetry with Shayla’s block and especially how you “adjusted” just one block in her quilt! So cool.

  135. Sarah November 18, 2014 at 9:52 pm #

My favorite block is Karen’s block, and I love the sampler. Beautiful fabric.

    I like Shayla’s block

  140. Liz Engman November 18, 2014 at 10:27 pm #

I really like them all, but I think Shayla’s block is more non-traditional and could be even more interesting in the quilt with the squares rotated to make a skewed star.

  141. Ronna November 18, 2014 at 10:36 pm #

I’m a sucker for stars so my favorite is Karen’s block and the star quilt.

  142. Carol J November 18, 2014 at 10:39 pm #

Hi Patti! I must say that I love your blocks in the Earth Rhythms fabrics 🙂 Although I find all of the blocks appealing, I am liking the block by Chris, and I am really enjoying the multi-block quilt layout. Another great line of fabrics – Thank You!!

  143. Melanie Belisle November 18, 2014 at 10:41 pm #

Although I like them all, Shayla’s block and quilt intrigue me and are soothing to look at. The collection is Earth Rhythms and the quilt makes me think of water and sky but then I see the rock layers of a canyon wall. Could have a fun time playing with these fabrics and layouts.

  144. usairdoll November 18, 2014 at 10:50 pm #

What beautiful fabric and blocks! My favorite is Karen’s block and the quilt made with her block as well as Chris’s and Celine’s blocks.

Thank you for a super giveaway and a chance to win.

  146. Karen in Breezy Point November 18, 2014 at 10:54 pm #

Hard to choose, they are all so pretty! Chris Hoover’s block is pretty cool, but Shayla’s block set in the quilt is stunning!

  147. Pamela R November 18, 2014 at 11:03 pm #

All look very cool in those fabrics. I’d like to see Shaylas block when put side by side with rotations.

  148. jen November 18, 2014 at 11:11 pm #

I really love the fabrics and suprisingly I like the modern block by Shayla.

  149. Bonnie November 18, 2014 at 11:16 pm #

  161. ritainalaska November 19, 2014 at 4:38 am #

Shayla’s block and her quilt is my choice … reminds me of the water out in the gulf of Alaska, a little choppy and sparkling when we used to go boating. will have to have some earth rhythms for this quilt!

  162. Erin Fowler November 19, 2014 at 5:52 am #

I love Karen ‘ s block and the quilt with her block in it. The Stonehenge Earth Rythms reminds me of winter and the icy freeze of it we are so use to here in the Canadian Rockies. Sew beautiful.

  163. Allison Evrard November 19, 2014 at 6:29 am #

I’m partial to stars, so Chris’s block is my favorite.

  165. Michelle Harrison November 19, 2014 at 7:15 am #

My favorite block is Karen’s block, but my favorite quilt is Shayla’s blocks in a quilt. There is something about sedimentary rock that lends itself to those stoney fabrics.

  166. Martina November 19, 2014 at 7:50 am #

I love Chris’s block best and the quilt with all the blocks looks amazing!

  167. Andrea November 19, 2014 at 7:50 am #

  170. daneesey November 19, 2014 at 10:04 am #

  174. Marie Woodhouse November 19, 2014 at 10:59 am #

I love Chris’s block this best, however all are great! the Fabrics are delightful, I am partial to blues and this fabric line is just beautiful! The Quilt I like the best is Karen, Chris and Celine’s quilt reminds me of Lake Superior with the sunshine producing sparkle stars on the cold water in winter. The other quilt reminds me of the ice on lake Superior and last winter was the best as far as frozen water and access to the caves, which the “V” shapes resemble the the caves. Awesome Quilts and Blocks from all!

  175. Claudia November 19, 2014 at 11:04 am #

I saw those fabrics from Northcott and started drooling. I finally found a LQS that stocks the Northcott line. Such lovely fabrics to work with.

I would take Shayla’s block. All of the blocks are lovely in this fabric line. Maybe it is because I like denim blue?

  176. Janet Mikes November 19, 2014 at 12:49 pm #

    I like all the blocks

  177. Donna Joy November 19, 2014 at 1:54 pm #

Shayla’s block, but it is hard to pick with all the wonderdul designs. Thanks,

  178. Bev Smith November 19, 2014 at 4:27 pm #

Wow, Patti, I love the new fabric so much that I can’t really choose a favourite block. I’ve always loved to see the strata in rocks. I will just have to find this fabric in my local quilt shop. It’s really lovely as are all the blocks and the quilts. I can always count on Northcott to produce beautiful fabrics. Thanx again. Bev.
