The newest issue of Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks (volume 7) is rolling off the presses as we speak, and the folks at Quiltmaker’s have organized another blog tour. Today is my day to post, so a warm welcome to visitors from the tour!
Northcott’s ad in the issue features the spa colorway of Serenity by Cheri Strole. I chose the alternate colorway (Caribbean – I am sitting on a beach in the Bahamas today!) to play with various blocks in this issue, and I would like you to tell me which block and quilt below are your favorite, for a chance to win a copy of 100 Blocks Volume 7.
There were 5 blocks designed by pattern designers that also design for Northcott, so I started with their blocks, substituting Serenity for the fabrics shown in the magazine.
Marilyn Foreman of Quilt Moments designed #664 Kaleidoscope Star. Marilyn’s specialty is kaleidoscope, so I used the main print from Serenity for the center portion of the block.
Chris Hoover of Whirligig Designs used Northcott’s Fragrance in her Tilt-a-Whirl block #669 and showcased the stripe beautifully. Since there wasn’t a stripe in Serenity, I used a directional vine print in its place in the center of the block.
Celine Perkins of Perkins Dry Goods always has a block in 100 Blocks, and #687 is Apron Strings. There is lots of plain area in this block.
Marjorie Rhine of Quilt Design NW designed #688 Hearts Around, and it works quite well with Serenity.
Jocelyn Ueng of It’s Sew Emma designed #697 Trendster – it has lots of movement.
I also used Quiltmaker tester Peg Spradlin’s Pay Day block #695, as she used Northcott’s Kaleidoscope collection in hers. It looks lovely in Serenity too.
Then I started combining the blocks in quilts, and that’s when the fun started! Not all of the blocks played well together – 4×4 layouts don’t always play well with 3×3 layouts. Some of the combinations were much more interesting than quilts made with just one block. Let’s take a look at some of them.
This quilt is a combination of Marjorie’s Hearts block #688 & Jocelyn’s Trendster block #697. The two blocks flow into each other so well that it’s hard to tell where one block ends and the next one starts!
I thought Celine’s Apron Strings block #687 was not too exciting until I combined it with other blocks. Wow! It is a fantastic alternate block! In this next quilt, it is set with Marjorie’s Hearts block.
In this quilt, Celine’s block is paired with Chris Hoover’s Tilt-a-Whirl block #669. This quilt now looks like it has blocks set on point instead of straight-set.
In this final quilt, Celine’s block is set with Marilyn’s Kaleidoscope Star block #664, and creates a diagonal trellis effect – amazing!

I love the Marjorie’s Hearts block because it reminds me of a longtime friend who collects quilted hearts. However, I have to admit that the fabric selection brought sentimental tears to my eyes. The design brought fond memories of my grandparents and times we spent at their beach home!
I love the simplicity of these blocks with the soft blues! Can’t wait to try them!
My fav is 688 and 697 combined….stunning. No beginning and no end…seamless? Enjoy the warmth of Bahama’s. It will warm up in Collingwood soon. Blue is now shut down!! Jo thatcher
Definitely the Tilt a Whirl block because it stands out but blends at the same time.
I love the tilt-a-whirl block.
I like Apron Strings because sometimes it’s a gift to be simple – but love it set with the Hearts block.
I liked the Payday block. I look for simple patterns because most of my work is now done for charilty purposes.
“Pick a favorite” she says. Like it’s easy. They are all so pretty in this fabric!
Favorite block – kaleidoscope star
Favorite quilt, the last one, combining kaleidoscope star and apron strings. I love two block quilts.
My favorite block is Marilyn Foreman’s #664 Kaleidoscope Star, and my favorite quilt is the one with Celine’s block and Marilyn’s Kaleidoscope.
I choose #664 Kaleidoscope Star as my favourite block as well as for the complete quilt.
Block 697 Trendster is really great! I would love to make it! The fabric is beautiful! I am a follower!
My favorite block is the Kaleidoscope Star (664). I like the way is shows off the print in the center. My favorite quilte pattern is the last one with the Kaleidoscope Star and the Apron Strings (687) block. I love the fabric and the colors and the way they come together in this last quilt pattern. I may have to add that to my list of “quilts to make” list.
My favorite block is the Tilt-a-Whirl, #669 and my favorite quilt is #687 (Apron Strings) and #664 (Kaleidoscope Star). And I absolutely love the Serenity Fabric 🙂
Soooo jealous that you are in the Bahamas! I live in Florida so I can also get those Caribbean sun rays. My block choice is the “Tilt a Whirl” block,very beach like for me!
I love the first block with the seashells, maybe I am just longing to be near the sea. My favorite quilt is the first one with the long grass, Seems to be flowing.
I like #695. the straight lines appeal to me.

Seeing lots of possibilities for the Tilt-A-Whirl block! Is the Serenity line available now? It is GORGEOUS! Am going to have to run by the quilt shop to pick up a few yards
They are all beautiful, but I think that the first block and the last quilt are my favorite!!! Can’t wait to see Volume 7!!

I love the Serenity fabric! All the blocks and quilts are lovely but my favorites are the Tilt-A-Whirl block and the Apron Strings #687 and Tilt-A-Whirl#669 quilt. Enjoy the Bahamas!

I really like what you did with the Apron Strings block! As I was reading through I saw the Apron Strings block and thought it wasn’t much, but when I saw it combined (in that amazing Serenity fabric!) with the Kaleidoscope Star block in the last quilt I was bowled over! Fantastic – that quilt is definitely my favorite! And the Apron String block might be my favorite block now because it’s so versatile – thanks for a great post!
my favorite block, hands down, is Kaleidoscope Star. and my favorite quilt is Kaleidoscope and Apron Strings– just amazing! Celine’s block just seems to compliment other blocks for making great secondary designs.

I had a hard time choosing. I really like block #667 and #687. I also like the fabric. When I return home I will look for both the book and fabric.
I love the Tilt-a-Whirl block and the last quilt made with this and the kaleidoscope star block.
I really like the kaleidoscope block and the many possibilities for its use. After taking a basic quilting class last fall I am now addicted. I just need to figure out a way to afford material on my social security income.
The fabric is so beautiful and looks so good in all the blocks that it’s hard to pick a favourite, but I think I’d have to go with the Tilt-a-Whirl block #669, and the quilt would be the one with Celine’s block with Marilyn’s Kaleidoscope Star block #664. They all look lovely.
I love Payday and Trendster blocks. The fabric is so soothing and relaxing, would love to relax under Serenity!
I like Celine’s #687. It proves that it is important to consider what blocks achieve on their own, but even more important to consider what using multiple blocks can do! My favorite quilt – the last one that combine’s Apron Strings and Kaleidoscope – really demonstrates this! Love, love, love the cool greens and blues in Serenity as well.
My favorite block is #664 the block is able to use the variety of the fabrics and my favorite quilt is the last quilt I like the unique the blocks fit together very interesting designs
Love the Hearts block and it is especially striking with the Apron Strings block! Wow looks like they were made to go together! But honestly, I love all of the Serenity fabrics! How peaceful yet elegant!
I love the Kaleidoscope Star block and combined with Apron Strings they make a lovely quilt. I would love to win some Serenity fabric and especially this colorway.
I love the block #664, and quilt #669. The colors are so soothing.
I love Peg Spradlin’s Pay Day block and the quilt I like is the 3rd one down with Chris Hoovers Whirl-a-gig design. Hard to choose though because these fabrics have my favorite colors in them.

i particularly liked the last quilt version as i like the diagonal lines created by the two blocks combination.
My favorite block was #688 Hearts Around. I liked Celine’s block set with Marilyn’s Kaleidoscope Star block #664. It is amazing how different they look depending on what other blocks they are set with.

I love the Kaleidoscope star block, I have a special fondness for stars! My favorite quilt is the last one with the Apron Strings block and the Kaleidoscope block, I really like the trellis effect. The Serenity fabrics are beautiful, those cool blues and greens make me want to go visit the ocean, especially since it’s going to be in the upper 90’s today here in the desert! I really like the Hearts Around block # 688, It is a very interesting block that looks like it could have impact in a quilt. Of course then my favourite quilt is the one that combines this block with Trendster # 697. The blocks flow so well together.

I really like the kaleidoscope Star block, especially when it is combined with Celine’s block.

I like the Tilt a Whirl block. The quilt I like was the last one, using the Apron Strings block and Kaleidoscope block. It is striking with the fabrics you used.

My eyes went straight to the Kaleidescope Star #664 and combined with Celine’s
block it looked like I was looking thru a real kaleidescope as I glanced at the four

I like the first block, #664 Kaleidoscope Star the best, but they are ALL very nice. The quilt combination I like the best is the last one, using #664 and #687 (Apron Strings). It is absolutely gorgeous!! I love the colors of all these quilts, so calming.
I think they are all lovely. But, if I had to choose just 1, I would pick #664 Kaleidoscope Star.

Pick just one??? I guess the Apron Strings and Tilt a Whirl look great together but experience tells me you need to see them on a wall in your fabric to decide.
they are all wonderful blocks and the fabrics are just beautiful. My favorite is the kaleidoscope star and the kaleidoscope quilt too. i love the beachy feel from the blocks and fabrics.
I liked #664 Kaleidoscope Star the best, but they all, are wonderful. We are moving to Naples, Florida and this gives me coastal inspiration!

I like both Kaleidoscope Star and Tilt-a-Whirl. The last quilt is my favorite. It was so hard to pick!
My favourite blocks was Peg Spradlin’s PayDay block. I loved the quilt with the Kaleidoscope blocks. What a wonderful magazine this will be!
I like block number 697 best by itself, but when you start combining things, I like the combination of 687 and 664.
I like the Tilt-a-Whirl block the best because it gives me the feel of nature.

My favorite is the kaleidoscope star. Love the colors and the seashell center. Reminds of times spent on the beach every year. Someday will make a quilt using sea glass colors. I like the quilt using Marjorie Rhines block
My preference is the Kaleidoscope Star #664, both alone and paired with Celine’s block for the whole quilt. Great color choices–the sea green/blues are very calming..

The fabric colors are wonderful. I really like the kaleidoscope quilt but they are all great. It is fascinating how different they can look with just a little movement.
The blocks are all great designs and the Quilts are beautiful. To pick a favourite it would be the last Quilt Celine’s block set with Marylyn’s Kaleidoscope Star Block. #664. I am trying to teach my teenage daughter how to quilt and the opportunity to win something that would show her all different blocks would be a thrill. Thank you for the chance.

Kaleidoscope star block is way cool…especially with the seashells in the center…the print makes them look appliqued into the block…..The apron strings and kaleidoscope star blocks quilts is my choice to try making….the diagonally setting that appears is way…..both quilt blocks definitely go together…..The first day of the QM 100 Vol 7 gave me 9 new quilt blocks to learn…way!!!!…thank you for being part of the tour…..

I like the Kaleidoscope block and the last quilt that was made with it also! I’m kind of a star person and I like the secondary diagonal lines. Good movement in the quilt.

Tilt a Whirl is may favorite block. I think a quilt using just that block would have a lot of secondary designs that would look great. My favorite quilt is the one with Tilt-a-Whirl and Apron Strings.
My fav is the tilt a wheel and my favorite block is the first one with the sea shells.. so fun seeing the different blocks and lay outs.

I like the Trendsetter block best (though all are darling) and the quilt using Trendsetter and Hearts together–especially in the colors shown.
Difficult choice, but I kept coming back to the Apron Strings block. In a quilt, I am drawn to the Apron Strings block with Marjorie’s Hearts block. STUNNING!!!

This was an interesting exercise. I selected both the block and the quilt and later realized the quilt I liked contained the block I chose. The block is Tilt-a-Whirl #669 by Chris Hoover, and the quilt is the one where Chris’s block is set with Marilyn’s Kaleidoscoope Star block #664.

I don’t have a favorite block or quilt. I like to see blocks made using different colors because it can change the whole look of the quilt.

Hmmm, decisions, decisions…. I like Marilyn’s Kaleidoscope Star, but for the quilt choice I really like the one that uses Celine and Chris’s blocks in it. Can’t wait to see the newest collection of blocks – thank you for keeping us in the loop Patti!

LOVE Marilyn’s Kaleidoscope Star. The design is fabulous, and as I like all things beachy, the Serentiy fabric makes this one that I’ll add to my “to do” list!

Love the pay day block #695 the block shows off the fabrics used beautifly and has given me an idea for my eldest sons quilt. He longs to retire where shorts and flipflops can be worn all year long.
I love the Tilt-a-Whirl block but couldn’t go past Apron Strings for the quilt – it looks really complex.

Kaleidoscope combined with Apron Strings is my favorite quilt, but I like the Hearts Around block alone. I used Northcott Silks over 20 years ago for smocked dresses and they were some of my favorite fabrics…and still are.
These blocks and quilts are beautiful and so fresh…lovely colors and design. My favorite block is Jocelyn Ueng’s #697 Trendster and favorite quilt is the first one using the combination of Marjorie’s Hearts block #688 & Jocelyn’s block.

My vote goes to block 664- and the last layout. I like how the print fits in the center of the kalaidescope star.
I love the Tilt-A-Whirl block and my favorite quilt is the last one–Kaleidoscope and Tilt-a-Whirl together.
I like the block #688 Hearts Around and the quilt with Celine’s block and Chris Hoover’s Tilt-a-Twirl block #669 set on point.

I like the last quilt best — looks like those little pools of water I’ve found around rocky beaches. My favorite block is the first one. Love the way you fussy cut for the center.
My favorite block is #697 – Trendster. The quilts were all really great so it was hard to choose, but I’ll go with the final quilt with the diagonal trellis effect.

I sew much liked Peg Sradlin’s Pay Day block #695. It was sew cool and peaceful looking – it spoke to me somehow. I also liked the quilt using Celine’s and Chris’ blocks #687 & #669. It was charming and I like the Irish Chain effect. Thanks for the chance to win!

My favorite individual block is the Kaleidoscope star but favorite combo is the #688 and 697. They blend so well.
The kaleidoscope block is my favorite!! The whole fabric collection is very soothing. I love the pairing of it with the tilt a whirl in the blocks on point quilt! Beautiful and inspiring….

I like the combo of Hearts and Trendster. The blocks may be of odd size but blend and flow with grace. Very calming.

#664 is very unusual. I like quilts that do not have the usual blocks. The kaleidoscope design is very pretty and not the norm. The colors are very nice.

Kaleidoscope Star is my favorite block — made in almost any fabric — and my favorite quilt is the combo of that block along with the Apron Strings block. — what a cool quilt and so restful in the fabrics you used.
They’re all great, but I really like the Trendster block and the quilt with Marjorie’s Hearts and Trendster.

Really like the movement in 697, and my favorite quilt is the combo of 697 and 688. I think these two block could be used in so many different quilt patterns.
I like the Kaleidoscope Star, for it’s movement but also for those beautiful big shells in the center fabric. I like the diagonal trellis created in the quilt using this block too.

So hard to choose! Initially my favorite block was Peg Spradlin’s Pay Day block #695 – and I loved the fabric. But when I look at the quilts, the Celine’s block set with Marilyn’s Kaleidoscope Star block #664 really caught my eye.
The last quilt is my favorite, hard choice though as they are all beautiful. Sigh!

The seashells used in the Kaleidlscope block are beautiful. It makes me want to try more of the Serenity fabric. The beach is definitely my place of serenity.

I like Marjorie Rhine of Quilt Design NW designed #688 Hearts Around. Picking a favorite quilt was much more difficult. They are all beautiful.

I think the Whirligig Designs block looks great and I like the how the shells are highlighted in Kaleidoscope Star. The fabric line that you used looks like it would be fun to play with.
